Echinopsis terscheckii is a species of the genus Echinopsis in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet terscheckii honors the court gardener Carl Adolph Terscheck from the garden of the Japanese Palace in Dresden.

Echinopsis terscheckii grows tree-shaped, is richly candelabra-like with several upright branches when old and reaches heights of 10 to 12 meters. A distinct trunk with a diameter of up to 45 centimeters is formed. The cylindrical shoots have a diameter of 10 to 20 centimeters. There are eight to 18 distinct blunt ribs . The large areoles on them are brownish and 1.5 to 3 centimeters apart. Eight to 15 yellowish to brownish thorns arise from them . They are often more numerous on old areoles. The thorns are 1 to 7 centimeters long or even longer.

The bell-shaped to funnel-shaped, white flowers appear on the side of the shoots. They are 15 to 20 centimeters long and have a diameter of up to 12.5 centimeters. Your pericarpel and the flower tube are covered with thick white or brown wool. The spherical, green fruits have a diameter of 3 to 4 centimeters.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Echinopsis terscheckii is distributed in the Bolivian department of Tarija and the Argentine provinces of Jujuy , Salta , Tucumán , Catamarca , La Rioja and San Juan on dry slopes of the Andean foothills at altitudes of 500 to 1500 meters.

The first description as Cereus terscheckii by Ludwig Georg Karl Pfeiffer was published in 1837. Heimo Friedrich and Gordon Douglas Rowley placed the species in 1974 in the genus Echinopsis .

Other nomenclature synonyms are Pilocereus terscheckii (J.Parm. Ex Pfeiff.) Rümpler (1885) and Trichocereus terscheckii (J.Parm. Ex Pfeiff.) Britton & Rose (1920). In addition, the following taxa were included in the species as a synonym: Trichocereus werdermannianus Backeb. (1936), Echinopsis werdermannianus (Backeb.) H. Friedrich & GDRowley (1974), Trichocereus terscheckii var. Montanus Backeb. (1951) and Echinopsis terscheckii var. Montana (Backeb.) H. Friedrich & GDRowley (1976).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Vulnerable (VU) ", d. H. listed as endangered.
