description

Wildprets Natternkopf is a perennial ( hapaxanthe ) plant that reaches heights of up to three meters. The base rosette , which can be up to a meter in diameter and consists of linear-lanceolate leaves, is characteristic of this type of adder head . The base rosette sits firmly on the ground with a short, unbranched trunk, the leaves are about 30 × 2 cm in size, are densely covered on both sides with relatively soft bristles and are therefore white-felted and rough. A single, narrow, conical inflorescence rises from the center of the rosette and is densely covered with innumerable flowers . Depending on the subspecies, the color of the flowers is red or pink, they finally turn blue. The broad, funnel-shaped flowers are between 10 and 14 mm long. The fruits are small nuts that are rough to the touch.

The flowering period extends from May to August.

Systematics

Two subspecies have been described for wild prets adder head:

  • Echium wildpretii H.Pearson ex Hook.f. subsp. wildpretii : nominate form with red flowers on Tenerife.
  • Echium wildpretii subsp. trichosiphon (Svent.) Bramwell : with pink-violet flowers on La Palma.

Occurrence

Wild prets Natternkopf on La Palma at an altitude of 2200 meters

This species, endemic to La Palma and Tenerife, occurs only in the subalpine level of the two islands: On Tenerife in the Cañadas del Teide and on La Palma in crevices of the Caldera de Taburiente and on the Roque de los Muchachos .

Due to the attractive inflorescences, this species is also often cultivated in gardens.
