Eckelsheim (desert)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Eckelsheim is a deserted area in the districts of Markt Einersheim and the Iphöfer district of Possenheim in the Lower Franconian district of Kitzingen . The settlement was abandoned in the 14th century. The reasons for this are unclear.

Geographical location

Eckelsheim is located southeast of Markt Einersheim on the boundary with Possenheim. The Einersheimer Church is about 1 kilometer from the desert site. The Moorseebach flows past in the north, while the Eckelsheim area is characterized by a small Moorseebach inflow. To the north-west is the Secretary Mill , which is the last remnant of the village and was also called Eckelsheimer Mühle for a long time . In 1914 the "Egelsee" corridor also existed. The deserted area of Kirchheim is also believed to be here.

history

The place name with the ending -heim refers to an early foundation in the 8th century. Eckelsheim was probably settled in the course of the Franconian advance to Main Franconia . The prefix Eckels- indicates a foundation by a nobleman with the name Aggili or Eckel, so that it was the "home of Aggili / Eckel". The village was probably created at the same time as Einersheim in the fertile valley of the Moorseebach.

The village was abandoned as early as the 14th century. When it was first mentioned in 1414, the area was already desolate. In the certificate of division of the Hohenloher legacy between Castell and Limpurg, only the "Eckelsheimer mule" was named. The village was a small settlement that consisted of only two hubs . Around 1550 it was called "Eckelsheimer Hüblein" with several acres of meadows. Underground remains of the village are classified by the Bavarian State Office for the Preservation of Monuments as a ground monument .
