Edward Francis Diener (* 1946 in Glendale , California ) is an American psychologist and author. He has been researching cross- cultural happiness research or subjective well-being for over 25 years and is one of the most cited and best-known researchers in this field with 260 specialist articles cited in more than 30,000 scientific papers.

Diener has been a Senior Scientist at the Gallup Organization since 1999, advising on well-being and positive psychology .

Life

Diener was born in Glendale, California in 1946 .

In 1968 he received his first degree ( Bachelor in Psychology) from California State University ; 1974 PhD from the University of Washington . In 2008, after 34 years of faculty at the University of Illinois , he retired from teaching.

The focus of his research on happiness and subjective well-being began in the early 1980s. In 1980 Diener began his first year of research in the Virgin Islands with the explicit aim of changing the focus of his research. His publication Subjective Well-Being (Psychological Bulletin, 1984) became the first more comprehensive and later much-cited work in the field.

From 1998 to 2003 he was editor of the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology and is still editor of the Journal of Happiness Studies . He co-founded the journal Perspectives on Psychological Science .

In 2010 he received an honorary doctorate from the Free University of Berlin .

In 2012, Diener won the American Psychological Association's Award for Distinguished Scientific Contributions , a prize for significant theoretical or empirical contributions to basic psychological research. In the same year he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

Ed Diener is married to the psychologist Carol Diener. Three of his five children (including Robert Biswas-Diener ) are also psychologists.
