Ed Emberley

Edward Randolph Emberley (born October 19, 1931 in Malden , Massachusetts ) is an American painter , author and illustrator .

life and work

Emberley studied art at the Massachusetts School of Art in Boston and earned his Bachelor of Arts with a major in painting and illustration. After a two year hiatus from military service, he graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design . Emberley has been a freelance artist since 1960.

Emberley has made illustrations for numerous children's and non-fiction books. He also wrote various drawing books such as My First Drawing Book ( Ed Emberley's Drawing Book ), in which he gives children step-by-step instructions for sometimes complex pictures from simple shapes.

Since 1955 Emberley has been married to the librarian and author Barbara Emberley, with whom he has published various books together. The couple have two children.

Awards

Emberley received numerous honors for his work. His first own work, The Wing on a Flea , earned him an entry in the New York Times' list of the best illustrated books of the year in 1961 . In 1967 he received the Caldecott Honor for the illustration of One Wide River to Cross , for which Barbara Emberley had written the text. The following year he was even the winner of the Caldecott Medal and the Lewis Carroll Shelf Awards for the illustration of the children's book Drummer Hoff, also written by his wife .
