Career highlights and awards

Edward Franklin "Ed" Ulinski (born December 7, 1919 in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania , USA , † September 17, 2006 in Chardon , Ohio ) was an American football player and coach. He played as a guard for the Cleveland Browns in the All-America Football Conference (AAFC).

Player career

College career

Ed Ulinski played American football in high school . After graduating from school, he studied at Marshall College from 1939 to 1941 . He played there in various positions with the Marshall Thundering Herd , but was mainly used as a guard. In 1941 he was voted All-American for his athletic achievements . He served in the US Army during World War II and was discharged as captain in 1946 .

Professional career

The AAFC was founded in 1944. The league started playing in 1946. Ulinski, like his former college teammate Frank Gatski, was signed by the Cleveland Browns after he turned down an offer from the Detroit Lions , who were in the rival league of the AAFC's National Football League (NFL). The coach and general manager of the team from Cleveland was Paul Brown , who brought Ulinski to the offense and defense of his team.

The Browns were the top team of the AAFC and had numerous later all-pro players such as Mac Speedie , Dante Lavelli and Bill Willis in their ranks. Ulinski was used as a player on the offensive line to protect quarterback Otto Graham and served as a pre-blocker for running back Marion Motley .

By the time the league was dissolved in 1949, the Browns won all four league titles. After the regular season 1946, the New York Yankees were defeated 14: 9 in the AAFC final . In 1947, the Yankees trained by Ray Flaherty were again defeated in the final. In the 14: 3 victory of the Browns, Graham ran a touchdown himself with the help of his offensive line. The following year Ulinski remained undefeated with his team in the regular season, which brought the return to the championship game with it, where the Buffalo Bills were defeated 49: 7.

In 1949, the Cleveland team won the final AAFC championship. The game against the San Francisco 49ers ended in a 21-7 win for the Browns.

After the 1949 season, the AAFC had to stop playing and Ulinski ended his playing career.

Coaching career

Immediately after his playing career, Ed Ulinski became assistant coach at Santa Clara University and Purdue University . After Weeb Ewbank , assistant to Paul Brown, left the Browns for the Baltimore Colts after the 1953 season , Ulinski returned to Cleveland. In 1971 he took over the video department of the Browns, which dealt with the evaluation of the game recordings.

Outside the field of play

Ed Ulinski was married and had a son and a daughter. He spent his old age in a nursing home and suffered from Alzheimer's disease .

Honors

In 1946 and 1948, Ulinski was voted All-Pro . He is a member of the Marshall University Hall of Fame and the Beaver County Sports Hall of Fame.
