Edd J Roush (born May 8, 1893 in Oakland City , Indiana , † May 21, 1988 in Bradenton , Florida ) was an American baseball player in Major League Baseball .

biography

The center fielder Edd Roush played his first game in the American League for the Chicago White Sox on August 20, 1913. In 1914, the left-hander moved to the Federal League for the Indianapolis Hoosiers , who paid him a salary of $ 2,000. In 1915 he moved to the Newark Peppers , who doubled his salary. After the Federal League was discontinued, he first moved to the New York Giants in 1916 before moving to the Cincinnati Reds during the season .

With the Reds he reached the 1919 World Series , which they won against the Chicago White Sox. In his years in Cincinnati, he never had a batting average lower than 32.1%. In 1917 and 1919 he won the title of best batsman in the National League . It had its best year in 1921 with 35.2%, but could not surpass Rogers Hornsby's mark .

From 1927 to 1929 he played again for the New York Giants. After an injury sustained in 1929, the Giants reduced his salary to $ 15,000 for 1930. Roush refused to sign the contract and was out of the season. A year later he was sold back to the Reds, where he played his last game in Major League Baseball on September 27, 1931.

Roush impressed not only with his punching qualities but also with an extraordinarily good field game. One of his specialties was that he always used extremely heavy baseball bats. According to his own statements, not a single bat was broken in his entire career.

In 1962, Roush was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame . In 1988 he died at the age of 94.
