In 1963, Stijkel was on the draft of the VVD list of candidates for the Second Chamber of the States General (Tweede Kamer der Staten-Generaal) as the planned spokesman for European affairs, but withdrew due to a dispute with the main board of the VVD about a passage in the election program about the Dutch attitude towards France back. He then became chairman of the Amsterdam Chamber of Commerce and was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of the Dutch Lion in 1963 for his services .
