Eddie Tickner (born October 18, 1927 , † May 2, 2006 in Tucson , Arizona , USA ) was an American music producer, publisher and manager, who became known through his collaboration with the folk rock band The Byrds .

Life

Tickner worked as an accountant until he met the folk singer Odetta in the early 1960s and became her manager. With Jim Dickson he founded the music publishing house Tickson Music in 1963 , with himself responsible for the finances and Dickson for the music. The first song that Tickson Music published was Get Together by Dino Valenti , a sales success, the rights of which the publisher was forced to sell a short time later. Through early recordings with David Crosby , Tickner and Dickson were the managers of the Byrds in 1965 and his singer Gene Clark , when he began a solo career in 1966. In 1967 the Byrds and Clark moved to Larry Spector , the manager of the US film actor Peter Fonda .

Tickner and Dickson were asked by ex-Byrd Chris Hillman to manage the Flying Burrito Brothers in 1969 , shortly before Gram Parsons left the group. In the same year Tickner introduced the band to singer and songwriter Rick Roberts as a replacement.

When Gram Parsons returned to the USA from England in 1971, Tickner took over his management. He hired for his first solo album GP members of the backing band of Elvis Presley . After Parsons' death in 1973, Tickner helped singer Emmylou Harris get off to a successful career start and managed such diverse artists as Etta James and the Flying Burrito Brothers, which was re-established in 1974 .

In 2006, shortly before his death, he helped the band Hacienda Brothers from Tucson, Arizona to a recording contract and arranged a film project for them in Europe.

Eddie Tickner was married to Delores Tickner, the ex-wife of Roger McGuinn and stepfather of his sons Patrick and Henry McGuinn.

obituary

"The most amazing thing about Eddie Tickner was the fact that he has remained one of the few downright honest people in the music business throughout his career."
