Ederlezi (song)
The Roma song can Ederlezi sings by many Orthodox Roma in the Balkans and in Turkey on May 6 (ie about 40 days after the vernal equinox ) celebrated djurdjevdan -bzw. Hıdrellez -Fest , a spring festival in honor of Chidr or St. George.
The song is believed to have originated in what was then Yugoslavia and was particularly popular in the 1980s. The authorship of a composer or whether it is folk songs is disputed. The Yugoslav rock band Bijelo dugme released a Serbo-Croatian version on the album Ćiribiribela in 1988 . A member of the Bijelo dugme band - Goran Bregović - used the song as a score in Emir Kusturica's 1988 film Time of the Gypsies . It appeared on the album with the movie soundtrack that same year. It was sung there by the Macedonian singer Vaska Jankovska. Bregović claimed the authorship for this song there. Several Roma from Šuto Orizari then also claimed their authorship of the song. The Rom Dušan Ristić from the Serbian band Kal cynically describes Bregović as part of the “gypsy music industry” for his handling of authorship.
