Zabranjeno pušenje (in German Smoking forbidden ) is a former Yugoslav rock band founded in 1980 as a garage band in Sarajevo . The music mixes various influences such as garage rock , punk , folk music from Southeast Europe ( folk ) and Roma music .

The founders of the group are Nenad Janković (* 1962) as Dr. Nele Karajlić , Davor Sučić as Sejo Sexon , Zenit Džozić (* 1961) as Fu-Do , Mladen Mitić as Munja , Dražen Janković (1965–2018) as Seid Little Karajlić , Ognjen Gajić, Mustafa Čengić as Muče and Zoran Degan as Poka . Elvis J. Kurtović serves as the band's substitute. The director Emir Kusturica joined the group in 1986 as an electric bass player.

The band got into conflict with Yugoslav authorities early on with political texts and commentaries.

The circumstances of the Bosnian War caused the group to separate in 1994. While part of the band moved to Belgrade and is now performing under the new name The No Smoking Orchestra , parts of the group stayed in Sarajevo or moved to Zagreb and continue to work under the same name. Both music groups claim the past of Zabranjeno pušenje for themselves, so albums before 1994 appear in the discographies of both bands.

In a review in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung , the Belgrade band The No Smoking Orchestra is criticized as follows: They play "hymns to the alleged Serbian war criminal Radovan Karadžić , from no other intellectual in Serbia can one hear more chauvinistic statements than from the chief electoral heir Kusturica."

The No Smoking Orchestra , also Emir Kusturica and the No Smoking Orchestra , is their own band from Belgrade. It was founded in 1997 by the former Serbian band members of Zabranjeno pušenje. Since the original name of the old band is protected by the author's rights of Sejo Sexon, the group chose the English translation of the name and called itself The No Smoking Orchestra.
