The Time of the Gypsies ( Serbo-Croatian : Дом за вешање, Dom za vešanje - "A home to hang out ") is a Yugoslav film made in 1988 by the director Emir Kusturica . Almost all the dialogues in the film are spoken in Romanes , the language of the Roma . Time of the Gypsies tells the story of a young Rom named Perhan, who possesses magical powers and involuntarily ends up in a criminal environment. The teenager develops from child to man during the film. Goran Bregović's film music is based on traditional tunes from the Balkans.

action

Since his mother is already dead, Perhan lives with his handicapped sister Danira and his uncontrolled uncle Merdžan with his beloved grandmother Hatidža. He wants to marry Azra, but her mother does not allow this, as Perhan is an illegitimate child of a Slovenian soldier and is poor. During the celebrations at the Ederlezi by the river, the two get closer and promise each other. Ahmed, the “man with the money”, comes to the village with his brothers to visit. Merdžan even loses his clothes playing cards with visitors, goes into debt and returns home angry. He needs money, which is denied him by his mother, whereupon he destroys the wooden house in which they live in the middle of a violent storm.

The next day, Ahmed's little son has difficulty breathing and is made well again by Hatidža, who knows how to heal. Ahmed wants to reward her, she makes an agreement with him: Danira, Perhan's sister, has to undergo an operation on her leg and Ahmed promises to take her to a hospital in Ljubljana . After Perhan cannot stay with his sister, he decides to accompany Ahmed to Italy, to Milan , where Ahmed and his brothers live from pimping . Perhan tries to earn money honestly first; but after the pimps humiliate him for it, he starts stealing and breaking into houses. He keeps a small part of the prey to himself every time.

Ahmed is tricked by his brothers, they disappear with some of his prostitutes and beggars; because he sees Perhan as a trustworthy representative of his interests, he appoints him as the new head. After a while, Perhan, who is now quite wealthy, is sent home to fetch “new supplies” of beggars. When he gets home, he finds Azra, whom he actually wanted to marry, pregnant. She claims it is his child, but Perhan doesn't believe her and suspects that she was rape pregnant by his uncle. Despite Azra's constant assurances that the child was from him, they marry on the condition that the newborn be given away immediately after birth. While visiting the village, Perhan discovers that no house will be built for him, as Ahmed had promised him, and that Danira was not operated on either, but had been forced to beg in Italy. Azra dies alone giving birth to her child. The boy is accepted by Ahmed into his gang of beggars.

After four years of searching, Perhan finds his sister Danira in Rome. She brings him to Perhan junior, who is very much like Perhan, so he realizes that it is really his own son. He takes Danira and his son to the train station, but returns to Ahmed's wedding, which is taking place, to seek revenge. Using his telekinetic skills, he kills Ahmed and stabs his brothers, but in the end is shot by Ahmed's bride. During the wake , little Perhan steals the coins that were placed on his father's eyes .

Awards

At the Cannes International Film Festival in 1989, Emir Kusturica was awarded the prize for best director, the film was also nominated for the Palme d'Or . At the Guldbagge Awards in Sweden in 1991, the film won the award for best foreign film . Time of the Gypsies was also nominated as best foreign film by the César 1990 in France .

criticism

“A cinematic odyssey that combines reality, fairy tales and legends of the gypsies with visionary, intoxicating images. The honest and understanding film goes beyond the portrayal of an individual fate and describes, with poetry and restrained humor, a universal journey of initiation between tradition and modernity, loss of values and wistful reconsideration "

Kusturica does not address the question of whether his portrayal of the Sinti and Roma helps to confirm existing prejudices. Nor is the subordinate position of women questioned anywhere in the film.

The editor-in-chief of the Internet forum Romblog.at, Laura Modovan, describes the film as clichéd and racist ( http://www.romblog.at/2018/04/16/meinung-romani-voices-teil-2-meinung-zu-die -time-of-the-gypsies-1989 / ).
