Edgard Frankignoul (born September 24, 1882 in Liège , Belgium , † September 7, 1954 ) was a Belgian inventor and entrepreneur . In 1908 he invented an in-situ concrete driven pile with an enlarged pile base, the Franki pile . In May 1909 he applied for a patent for his invention . The company was founded in Belgium in 1910, practically shortly before the outbreak of the First World War . Despite the threat of the war, Edgard Frankignoul founded the “Société des Pieux Armés Frankignoul” together with Edmond Baar, an aristocrat from Liège, in 1910. The "Cie Internationale" followed as early as 1911.

International distribution

The stake was so successful that twenty years later the technique was being used by 34 subsidiaries and licensees around the world.

After a few initial problems, the young Belgian company was able to develop quickly beyond the country's borders. Even before 1914, Frankip piles were used in more distant countries such as Russia , Romania , Egypt , Spain , Italy and Switzerland . Between 1919 and 1928 Frankignoul signed contracts for work abroad with numerous companies, and licenses were also issued for Switzerland, China , Greece , the Congo , Japan and Italy.

In Germany , Philipp Holzmann AG acquired the execution and naming rights in 1926 . The market launch was successful and led to the foundation of Frankipfahl Baugesellschaft mbH in Düsseldorf in 1932 .

Large building projects were given to Frankipfahl foundations . B. the Résidence Palace in Brussels (1923–1927) with 2,458 piles, the bridge over the Waal near Nijmegen (1933) with around 1,100 piles, the Sydney Opera House and numerous buildings in Brasilia , the then newly emerging capital of Brazil. Other well-known construction projects are the foundation of the Dexia tower on Place Rogier in the Quartier de l'Europe in Brussels and the Rosetta dam on the Nile .

With his death in 1954, the entrepreneur Edgard Frankignoul left behind a company that was constantly expanding worldwide. In the 1960s the Franki Group had branches in 44 countries.

Today there are still numerous FRANKI companies or construction companies around the world that produce the Frankipstahl, z. B. in Germany, Belgium, Poland , Spain, South Africa , Australia , Canada and Venezuela .

In Liège, a boulevard is still named after the inventor Edgard Frankignoul.
