The Éditions Larousse are a publisher in Paris that mainly publishes dictionaries , encyclopedias , specialist lexicons , non-fiction and school books .

history

The publishing house goes back to the "Librairie Larousse et Boyer" founded in 1852 by Pierre Larousse and Augustin Boyer. The publishing house was independent until 1983 when it was bought first by "CEP Communication", then in 1998 by the French media group Vivendi , and finally in 2004 by Hachette Livre .

symbol

The publisher's symbol is a young woman who blows the seeds off a dandelion dandelion (“ La semeuse ”, in German “the sower”). Until 1993 it was accompanied by the mottoJe sème à tout vent ” (“I sow in all winds”).

Publications

The most famous works are (all in French ):

  • Petit Larousse illustré , an encyclopedic dictionary in one volume and the best-selling dictionary in France. The 47th edition of the Petit Larousse illustré , published in 1909, for example, comprises 1,664 pages. It is characterized by the division into a first part with subject terms and a second part with proper names (people, place names, etc.), separated by a few pages on pink paper with Latin and Greek expressions and phrases.
  • Grand Larousse illustré , a three-volume encyclopedia with 85,000 articles, is sold with a multimedia version.
  • Encyclopédie Universelle Larousse , a multimedia encyclopedia with 150,000 articles; the three editions Edition Prestige , l'Intégrale and l'Essentielle also have multimedia inserts.
  • Foreign language dictionaries for German , English , Italian , Catalan , Portuguese , Spanish and other languages.

Well-known, no longer published works:

  • Grand dictionnaire universel du XIXe siècle (1864–76, 15 vols .; supplements 1878 and 1887), the encyclopedia that made the publisher's reputation.
  • Grand Larousse encyclopédique , Grand Dictionnaire encyclopédique Larousse and Grand Larousse universel , encyclopedias with 10-15 volumes published between 1960 and 1982 (?).

The First World War published by the Federal Agency for Civic Education is the German translation of Larousse de la Grande Guerre .
