Edmund Blum (born September 9, 1874 in Steinamanger , Hungary , † April 14, 1938 in Vienna ) was an Austrian dentist and writer.

Life

Edmund Blum was born in 1874 as the son of Alexander Blum and Julia Blum, née Lazarus. He studied at the medical faculty in Vienna. On 29 April 1898 he received his doctorate from the University of Vienna Dr. med. and in 1907 he entered the Medical Association. He earned his living as a dentist, but he was also active as a writer and publisher.

Career

Blum wrote numerous books under his own name (only DNB - registered over 20 works) and he also used the pseudonym EB Junkh ( Mädis Irrwege , 1925). His first book was called “Why aren't the Jews baptized ?!” and was published in 1913 by 0. Th. Scholl. His project “Dr. Blum Bücher ”- a series of“ sexual-psychological ”novels, short stories and studies - secured him, in addition to the charge of pornography, the attention of the competition and the Viennese authorities. In 1920 he founded his own publishing house with the name EB Seps Verlag, based in Vienna 18th, Währinger Strasse 123, and in advertising he referred to himself as the "German Maupassant ". He later invented another series called "Intimate Library" and wrote several other short stories, although not all of them were published, including: The Ascetic, The Desecrator, and The Disorientation . In 1928 he founded "Bergis Verlag Wien", where other authors ( Max Epstein , Hermann W. Anders , Hellmut Schlien , Fritz von Unruh or Berthold Sprung ) were also published. Edmund Blum died in Vienna on April 14, 1938, immediately after the National Socialist annexation of Austria .

Trivia

A plaque on the wall of the house in Szombathely where a Blum family lived in the mid-19th century

Because of the character Leopold Bloom , the main character in the novel Ulysses by James Joyce , Bloomsday is celebrated every year on June 16 . Because Joyce let the father of Leopold Bloom, Rudolf Virág, (Hungarian Virág means flower) descend from Szombathely, Bloomsday takes place in Szombathely every year. The city placed a statue of Joyce in the center and a memorial plaque was placed on house number 40 (Fö tér 40), where Martin Blum, Edmund Blum's grandfather lived in the second half of the 19th century.
