Edmund Jan Osmańczyk ( listen ? / I ) (born August 10, 1913 in Deutsch Jägel ; † October 4, 1989 in Warsaw ) was a Polish historian, journalist, writer, activist of the Polish minority in Germany, parliamentarian and fighter in the Polish Home Army . Audio file / audio sample

Edmund Jan Osmańczyk was a member of the Union of Poles in Germany , head of the federal press center since 1935, publisher of the Polish-language magazines "Młody Polak w Niemczech" ( The Young Pole in Germany ), "Nowiny" ( News ), "Naród" ( Das People ).

In 1938 he moved to Poland. During the Second World War he was active in the Polish resistance movement. In the Warsaw Uprising of 1944, he headed the insurgents' radio station. 1945–1946 he was active as a foreign correspondent for the Polish press in Germany, was a reporter at the Potsdam Conference (July 17 to August 2, 1945) and at the Nuremberg Trial of Major War Criminals (from November 20, 1945 to October 1, 1946) ). From 1948 to 1952 he lived in Szczecin , then in Warsaw.

1952–1961 and 1969–1985 he was a member of the Sejm , 1979–1980 a member of the State Council of the People's Republic of Poland .

1983–1988 he was chairman of the ZAiKS (Association of Stage Authors and Composers).

In 1975 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Silesia in Katowice, and in 1988 from the University of Wroclaw .

In 1988 he became a member of the Lech Wałęsa Citizens Committee. At the round table (February 6 to April 5, 1989) he took part alongside the Solidarność opposition. He was elected to the Senate in the first free election on June 4, 1989 , but died a few months later.

Edmund Jan Osmańczyk wrote almost 50 books, mostly devoted to German-Polish relations. Two of his books were published in many editions: "Sprawy Polaków" ( The Affairs of Poles ) and "Encyklopedia ONZ i stosunków międzynarodowych" (English: The Encyclopedia of The United Nations and International Agreements , Spanish: Enciclopedia mundial de relaciones internacionales y Naciones Unidas ) .
