Edmund Jakob Külp (born April 16, 1801 in Nordheim ; † July 28, 1862 in Darmstadt ) was director of the technical college in Darmstadt from 1848, from which today's Technical University of Darmstadt emerged .

Life

Edmund Jakob Külp was born in 1801 in Nordheim, Hesse. He came from a Protestant pastor's family. From 1818 he studied at the Athéneé in Brussels, actually to learn French and to prepare for military service. The Belgian astronomer and statistician Adolphe Quetelet, however, got him excited about mathematics. He continued his studies at the University of Heidelberg. In 1824 he received his doctorate from the University of Giessen with a thesis "Dissertatio de curva focali regulari" (Mannheim 1824). In July 1826 he became the second teacher at the secondary school in Darmstadt, which was founded in the same year. In 1833 he became the first physics teacher at the "Technical School" branch of the newly founded Higher Trade School, the forerunner of the Technical University of Darmstadt. In 1846 Külp received the title of professor. Two years later he succeeded Theodor Schacht (pedagogue) as director of the higher vocational school and at the same time of the secondary school associated with it. He held this office until his death.

With great commitment, he further developed the higher vocational school in the direction of a polytechnic. The extension to a polytechnic with all rights of a university was only implemented after his death. In 1868 it was converted to a polytechnic school, which in 1877 became a technical college .

Külp was married to Louise Christiane Hein (1812-1859). Several children arose from the marriage. Ludwig Georg Külp (1835-1891) was born in 1835 and was an assistant at the TH Darmstadt from 1858 on.

Edmund Külp was buried in the old cemetery in Darmstadt (grave site: II Mauer 74).

Publications

The four-volume “Textbook of Experimental Physics” (Darmstadt 1854), which Külp wrote for his students, has enjoyed an excellent reputation; No less is his editing of Francoeur's textbook of higher analysis (Darmstadt 1851) an achievement worthy of recognition.

Honors

  • 1858: Knight's Cross of the Order of Merit of Philip the Magnanimous
