Eduard August, Duke of York and Albany
Prince Edward Augustus of England and Hanover (born March 14 . Jul / 25. March 1739 greg. In London ; † 17th September 1767 in Monte Carlo , Monaco ) was Duke of York and Albany and Earl of Ulster (for 1. April 1760).
Life
Eduard August was the second son of Prince Friedrich Ludwig of Wales (1707–1751) and his wife Augusta von Sachsen-Gotha-Altenburg (1719–1772), daughter of Duke Friedrich II and Magdalena Augusta von Anhalt-Zerbst . His grandfather, King George II , gave him the ducal dignity of York and Albany. His older brother was as George III. King of Great Britain and Elector and from 1815 King of Hanover.
When Eduard August was on his way to Genoa , he fell ill and was brought ashore at the next port. At the court of Monegasque Prince Honoré III. he died a little later. His body was brought back to England and buried in Westminster Abbey . Eduard August died unmarried and without descendants.
He was an active Freemason and a member of German lodges; In his honor, the Great State Lodge of Prussia was given the addition "Royal York for Friendship".
According to him, Prince Edward County in Virginia, the Cape York Peninsula in Australia's Queensland and the Duke of York Island in Papua New Guinea named.
