Eduard Bischoff
Eduard Bischoff (born January 25, 1890 in Königsberg (Prussia) , † April 1, 1974 in Soest ) was a freelance artist and professor at the Art Academy in Königsberg , East Prussia. His artistic work in the period between 1905 and 1974 included painting, sculpture and work in the fields of ceramics, glass painting and graphics including commercial graphics.
Life
After training as an apprentice in Hohenstein and Preußisch Eylau , Bischoff, the son of a businessman, moved from 1908 to study freely in the circle of artists around Fritz Boehle in Frankfurt am Main .
During this time and afterwards (until 1910), some ship trips to the Orient and the eastern Mediterranean area were made. With a four-year break due to the First World War, in which he served as a soldier in East Prussia , Galicia and France , he studied from 1910 to 1920 at the Königsberg Art Academy under Ludwig Dettmann , Heinrich Wolff and Richard Pfeiffer . He made friends with Fritz Ascher , of whom he painted a portrait in 1912.
Until his appointment as professor in 1936, Bischoff lived as a freelance artist in Königsberg. During this period he also made numerous trips to northern, southern and southeastern Europe. In 1924 he met Lovis Corinth . After military service in the Second World War and fleeing to Mecklenburg as well as a three-year stay in the Lüneburg Heath , Bischoff came to Gelsenkirchen in 1948 , where he settled in the artists' estate around Halfmannshof until 1962 and worked as a freelance artist.
In 1952 and 1953 he traveled to Africa. In 1958, Bischoff created the mosaic “Commerce, Economy and Transport” in Gelsenkirchen for the foyer of the state central bank at its former headquarters at Florastraße 26.
In 1962 Eduard Bischoff moved to Soest, where he lived and worked until his death.
Very versatile in his art in terms of the processed material, Bischoff has remained true to the subject of his East Prussian homeland throughout his life.
Eduard Bischoff had two children with his wife Gertrud, daughter Berte and son Fridolin, who fell in the Caucasus in 1942.
