Eduard Breuninger (* 1854 in Backnang ; † 25. March 1932 ) was a German retail - entrepreneur and founder of the department store group Breuninger .

Life

Breuninger came from the smallest of backgrounds, his father was a tanner in Backnang. At the age of 13 he began a commercial apprenticeship in the Albert Müller textile shop in Backnang, Marktstrasse 29, which he successfully completed. In 1871 he moved to Stuttgart .

On March 8, 1881, he founded his own company in Münzstraße 1 in Stuttgart and in 1888 bought the historic restaurant Zum Großfürsten , Münzstraße 7. Eduard Breuninger initially chose Ed as his company . Breuninger, To the Grand Duke . The business expanded quickly. Eduard Breuninger also went hitherto unknown paths with his advertising campaigns . In 1903 a new building replaced the two old parent houses; In 1908 a new building with a front facing Sporerstraße followed, based on American models. From 1912 there was the employee magazine Breuningers monthly , also a novelty.

In 1889 the opening advertisement for the new women's ready- to-wear department read: "Closed on Sundays" - Breuninger guaranteed its employees Sunday rest and vacation, which was completely unusual at the time. In 1896, the Breuninger company sent mail for the first time, showing the latest fashion trends in the style of a magazine. Breuninger traveled several times to the USA to familiarize himself with sales practices. Even during the global economic crisis , Breuninger continued to expand and build.

In Backnang, Breuninger donated 10,000 Reichsmarks to the then city library ; He also gave a lot of money to charities, sports clubs and other organizations: in 1928 he donated his parents' house to the Protestant parish. During this time, Breuninger supported the Hohenrodter Bund and made his holiday home available as its conference venue. In 1930 he contributed 100,000 Reichsmarks to the construction of a community center.

In 1916, Breuninger converted his company into a stock corporation . Another new building - Marktstrasse 3 - followed in the years 1929 to 1931. Soon after the inauguration of the new fashion house, Breuninger died after a brief, serious illness. He was buried in the forest cemetery in Stuttgart .

At Marktstrasse 29 there has been a memorial plaque to the honorary citizen of Backnang since October 11, 2008 , after which a street is named.
