After attending the boys' school and from 1853 the municipal high school in his hometown, he studied philosophy and philology in Leipzig with the aim of becoming a teacher at a higher school. In 1864, after passing the state examination and obtaining a doctorate in philosophy, he came to the Plauen grammar school to complete his probationary year here. He taught Latin, Greek, German and history and got a permanent position there in 1865.

In addition to teaching, he published philosophical works on the problem of sensualism and dealt intensively with the history of the Vogtland. Even after he was transferred to the Chemnitz grammar school in 1881, he used time and again to make excursions there. As a historian he published a. a. several articles on the history of individuals and castle complexes in the Vogtland as well as between 1896 and 1903 a total of 163 articles under the title Vogtland antiquities .

Johnson was also concerned with the dwindling influence of the Greek and Latin languages. He published two books pseudonymously with idioms and vocabulary of everyday use to encourage the active use of these "dead" languages in everyday life.

Another passion of Johnson was journalism. So he initially edited the Vogtlandische Anzeiger and Tageblatt as a part-time job before giving up his teaching job in 1895 to work as a full-time editor for the then most popular daily newspaper in the Vogtland.

He died of a heart attack on an excursion at Fuchspöhl west of the village of Sachsgrün. A memorial stone and an information board were set up there.
