Diedrich Jakob Eduard Wellmann (born June 25, 1842 in Friederikensiel near Jever , † January 16, 1918 in Berlin ) was a German classical philologist and grammar school director. He is best known for his treatises on ancient philosophy.

Life

Eduard Wellmann, the son of a teacher and district school inspector, was first taught in his father's school, then from 1857 to 1859 he attended the school teachers' seminar in Oldenburg. He then worked for half a year as an assistant teacher at the primary school in Esenshamm. At Easter 1860 he entered the Jever grammar school, where he passed the final exam three years later. Wellmann then studied philology and theology in Heidelberg and Berlin . Without completing his studies, he was employed as a provisional teacher at the Oldenburg grammar school in 1866. In March 1868 he passed the teaching exams for Latin, German, Greek and Hebrew as well as religion and English as minor subjects in Berlin. In the fall of 1868 Wellmann went to the Friedrichsgymnasium in Frankfurt / Oder as a "scientific assistant teacher", where he married on March 31, 1869 and received his first permanent position the next day as a regular teacher.

On April 1, 1870, he moved to the grammar school in Waren / Müritz, where he worked for seven years. During this time he pursued his doctorate to become Dr. phil. at the University of Rostock , which he reached in 1873. His degree enabled him to be promoted to senior teacher the following year (February 28, 1874). On October 1, 1877, Wellmann moved to Berlin, where he took his life position at the Königstädtisches Gymnasium . On November 15, 1884 he was appointed high school professor. When the director Ludwig Bellermann moved to the Gray Monastery high school in 1893 , Wellmann was elected as his successor. On July 30, 1907, he was retired and appointed to the Privy Councilor. He died on January 16, 1918.

Scientifically, Wellmann was particularly concerned with the philosophy of the Stoics . As early as 1870 he published a treatise in the program of the Friedrichsgymnasium in Frankfurt under the title Zenos Evidence Against the Movement and Refutations . He also dedicated his Rostock dissertation to the same topic: The Philosophy of the Stoic Zenon (1873). In Berlin he came into contact with the scientists Eduard Zeller and Hermann Diels (senior teacher at the Königstädtisches Gymnasium until 1882). Here he published an edition of the text Galeni qui fertur de partibus philosophiae libellus in 1882 . He also published the translation of the Metaphysics of Aristotle by Hermann Bonitz (1890) and the eighth edition of the Historia philosophiae Graecae by Heinrich Ritter and Ludwig Preller (1898). As a recognized expert in his field, he published many articles for the Realencyclopadie of classical antiquity .
