Ludwig Ernst Joachim Bellermann (born November 7, 1836 in Berlin ; † February 8, 1915 in Berlin) was a German philologist , Germanist and educator . He was the director of the Berlin Gymnasium at the Gray Monastery .

Life

Ludwig Bellermann comes from a Berlin family with a long pedagogical tradition. His father, Johann Friedrich Bellermann , was director of the Berlin Gymnasium at the Gray Monastery, as was his grandfather, Johann Joachim Bellermann . His brother Heinrich later became a singing teacher there.

From 1846 Ludwig was a student at his father's grammar school. He studied from 1855 philology at the University of Heidelberg and received his doctorate in 1861 in Halle / Saale for doctor of philosophy . During his studies he became a member of the Allemannia Heidelberg fraternity .

His professional career began in 1860 as a member of the royal seminar for learned schools in Berlin led by philologist August Boeckh . From 1863 to 1877 he worked as a teacher for German and Greek at the Berlinisches Gymnasium . The Berliner Tageblatt reported in 1877 that Julius Schubring , senior teacher at the Royal Wilhelms-Gymnasium in Berlin , was up for election for the position of director at the newly founded Königstädtisches Gymnasium . Bellermann, senior teacher at the Gray Monastery high school , was chosen instead of him and taught German, Greek and Latin there . In 1893 he returned to the grammar school of his childhood and youth as director and teacher. He did not retire until 1911, at the age of seventy-five.

In his academic work he dealt intensively with Sophocles and Friedrich Schiller , which he made accessible for school use with his annotated editions. His contribution as editor of Schiller's works in the book series Meyer's classic editions in fourteen volumes (1895 to 1897) was significant .

Bellermann was a founding member and later chairman of the Society for German Literature , a member of the Association for the Reading of Greek Authors, a member of the Philology Association in Berlin and a member of the Berlin High School Teachers Association.

In 1906 he was awarded the title of " Privy Councilor " for his services . The Berlin University honored him in 1894 by awarding him an honorary doctorate .
