Meyer's classic editions

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Under the title Meyer's Classic Editions (initially Meyer's Classic Editions in 150 volumes ), a series of editions of works by classic, mainly German-speaking writers appeared from 1870 until the 1930s .

History and conception

The series was published in the Bibliographisches Institut . It goes back to earlier undertakings of the publisher's founder Joseph Meyer , above all to Meyer's Groschen-Bibliothek der Deutsche Classiker für alle estates (whose motto was "Education makes you free") and Meyer's Volksbücher , from which individual editions were taken.

The aim of the book series was to make the most important authors of recent German literature - with individual additions from other languages - available in representative editions. The compilations should include the permanently valid works of the respective author. The text presentation followed critical edition standards. All volumes contain explanations and z. Sometimes very extensive, small print biographical introductions.

The main focus of the collection is lyrical and dramatic poetry from the period from 1750 to 1850. Only authors who were considered "classical" in the late 19th century are included. In view of the scope and editorial effort of the editions dedicated to him, Johann Wolfgang Goethe has an outstanding position . Individual issues - e.g. B. the Heine edition published by Ernst Elster - were of decisive importance in their time. The ten-volume edition of Shakespeare's works , which is also offered , assumes that the Schlegel-Tieck translation is a literary achievement of its own importance.

Editor and revisions

The Germanist Ernst Elster was the main editor of the series . Expert editors, mostly Germanists, were responsible for editing the individual editions of the work .

Numerous reprints were made up until the late 1930s. Several issues were replaced or supplemented by revisions.

layout

The volumes were produced in a bibliophile design and in a technically demanding manner. The most widespread and best known today is the cover design in dark green canvas with pretty color and gold-embossed Art Nouveau ornamentation on the back and front cover. There are also patterned, colored attachments and a colored marbled cut .

But there were also copies in half leather binding and (around and after 1918 due to the war and the economy) in a simpler version.
