Alois Brandl (literary scholar)

Alois Brandl (born June 21, 1855 in Innsbruck , Austrian Empire , † February 5, 1940 in Berlin ) was an Austro-German philologist .

Life

Alois Brandl studied in Vienna, Berlin and London. After professorships at the universities in Prague, Göttingen and Strasbourg, he was appointed to the Chair of English Philology in Berlin in 1895 . Along with Julius Zupitza, Brandl was one of the founders of the Institute for English and American Studies at the Humboldt University in Berlin, which was established in 1895 . This emerged from the Romansh-English seminar at the university, which was founded by Zupitza in 1877 together with the Romance scholar Adolf Tobler . At Brandl's instigation, Romance studies was separated from the seminary after Tobler's death. This also marked the transition from classical to modern philology in Berlin .

Unlike Zupitza, Brandl attached importance to the early modern and modern language, literature and culture of Great Britain . In addition to the main work, which was the work of William Shakespeare , Brandl was involved in the production of sound recordings of British prisoners of war in POW camps. The records of the Royal Prussian Phonographic Commission , which were largely made between 1915 and 1918 under the direction of Wilhelm Doegen , formed the basis of the Berlin Sound Archives . The collection of vocal portraits from the beginning of the 20th century is today u. a. Valued by British linguists as extremely important and has achieved the status of a national treasure in Great Britain.

Brandl retired in 1923. His successor was Wilhelm Dibelius (1876–1931), the son of the theologian Franz Wilhelm Dibelius . After his early death, Brandl took over the management of the seminar again. In 1932 Walter F. Schirmer succeeded the chair.

Appreciation

Brandl was president of the German Shakespeare Society in Weimar from 1901 to 1921 . In 1904 he was elected a full member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences . Brandl was chairman of the Society for the Study of Modern Languages ​​and was a member of the Royal Society of Literature and a member of the Vienna Academy .

Brandl is considered a pioneer in American studies and was instrumental in setting up the Berlin America Institute and its specialist library in the Berlin State Library .
