Eduard van Arkel

Anton Eduard van Arkel (born November 19, 1893 in 's-Gravenzande , † March 14, 1976 in Leiden ) was a Dutch chemist.

Life

Anton Eduard was the son of the doctor Dirk van Arkel and his wife Anna Petronella Ris Lambers. From 1906 he attended high school in The Hague . On September 19, 1912, he began studying medicine at the University of Leiden , specializing in chemistry, and moved to Utrecht University in the same year . This was, among other things Hugo Rudolph Kruyt his teacher. From 1915 he worked as an assessor for inorganic chemistry in Utrecht, where he received his doctorate in chemistry on July 1, 1920 with the thesis Uitvlokkingssnelheid van het seleensol (German: Flocculation speed of Selensol ). He then received a position as an assessor at the pharmaceutical-therapeutic laboratory in Leiden and from 1921 was active in the chemical laboratory of the Philips incandescent lamp factory in Eindhoven . On July 21, 1934, he was appointed to the professorship of chemistry at the University of Leiden. He gave his inaugural lecture on October 26th of the same year under the title Nieuwere inzichten in de Scheikunde (German: New Insights into Chemistry ). During the German occupation of the Netherlands in World War II, he resigned his professorship on May 30, 1942 and was reinstated on September 4, 1945 after the war. In the academy year 1955/56 he became rector of the Alma Mater and on February 8, 1956 he gave his rectorate speech Miskende Wetenschap (German: misunderstood science ). On May 11, 1962 he was accepted as a member of the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences and on May 29, 1964 he was retired.

Together with Jan Hendrik de Boer, he developed the Van-Arkel-de-Boer process, named after both researchers, for the extraction of high-purity metals, which is used in particular for titanium , zirconium and hafnium .

Van Arkel married on July 21, 1920 Henderika Geertruida Adriani (born December 9, 1890 in Neede; † March 22, 1984 in Leiden), the daughter of Derk Hendrik Nicolaus Adriani (born March 3, 1859 in Uithuizen; † December 8, 1952 in Heelsum) and his wife Elisabeth Maria van der Goot (born September 25, 1861 in Zaandam, † August 11, 1929 in The Hague). The marriage has two sons and two daughters. From the children we know:
