Education Y (spelling EDUCATION Y, formerly buddY EV - Forum Neue Lernkultur ) is a German provider of educational programs.

General

In the network of the central educational institutions day care center, school, family and university, the organization developed four programs in the fields of action school, family, day care center and university - buddY, familY, mY day care center and studY. The non-profit association buddY EV, based in Düsseldorf , was founded in 2005. The aim of the association is to promote the skills and potential of children and young people. That is why he advocates a changed learning culture that focuses on the needs of young people. Around 30 employees work in the office. There has been a branch in Munich since 2013 . There are three institutions among the 23 members of the association.

history

The project was launched in 1999 by the Vodafone Foundation Germany (then Mannesmann Mobil) based on an idea from the “ Off Road Kids ” street child aid association . The preventive program was intended to prevent children and young people at risk from slipping onto the streets. Through annual campaigns such as the buddy student competition 2005/2006 as well as the dissemination of the materials, the buddy project gained greater awareness and reached more and more schools. In 2000 the content of the previous prevention project for street children and young people was realigned. It was not until 2005 that the buddy project was transferred to an independent association buddY EV. He developed the buddY project of the same name into the program. It aimed at acquiring social skills and was initially implemented in schools in grades 3 to 10. According to the motto “Take care of each other. Being there for eachother. Learning with each other “strengthens students and should lead them to take responsibility for themselves and others and to resolve conflicts constructively. In this context of goals, it is a wide-ranging module program of primary violence prevention in schools. All types of schools are now taking part; pupils from the first to the 13th grade are reached.

Specially trained buddY trainers and teachers develop school-specific practical projects for each school. Students take on sponsorship for younger classmates, help others with learning, and act as mediators. Based on the experiences they gain in these projects, they develop values ​​and skills for life. With regard to problem areas such as B. violence, addiction or exclusion, the buddY program has a primary preventive effect, because it strengthens the available resources and imparts missing social skills of the students. It can therefore be used as an independent prevention program in schools. Due to its open and needs-based concept, it is also suitable for supplementing and networking existing projects and offers (e.g. dispute settlement / conflict guidance or anti-bullying primer). In the pupils, it strengthens social skills such as a change of perspective, the ability to reflect, the ability to cooperate and conflict, as well as communication skills . The program is used in a variety of ways, for example to help prevent addiction and violence , to promote cooperative learning , to strengthen student co- administration or to influence school dropouts.

The association initially had the addition "Association for the Promotion of Social Learning ". Later, in the course of the development of the “familY program”, the association supplement was changed to “Forum New Learning Culture”. Further programs have been created since 2010: mY kita and studY program. The most recent initiative was the “Pacemaker - pacemaker for digital schools”, which was conceived in collaboration with Teach First Germany and will start in 2018 at selected schools in Düsseldorf.

Since October 2016 the buddY EV association has been operating under the name EDUCATION Y (Y = Why) with the claim “Education. Together. Shape."

Programs

The association works z. Currently with four programs, each of which is effective in the central educational institutions :

  • The buddY program used in the school promotes the social skills of students. As BuddYs, they take responsibility for themselves and others in projects as well as in class and are thereby strengthened in their personality
  • The familY program works with parents as a formative educational partner for their children. The program is education centered and does not focus on parenting issues.
  • The mY kita program works towards a successful collaboration between parents and educational professionals in the sense of mutual and benevolent support for the child.
  • The studY program aims to improve the quality of teacher training. The focus is on deepening the practical relevance. Student teachers should be able to inspect schools that are characterized by particularly good work. The selection of “outstanding schools” is based on the criteria of the German School Prize .

Socio-educational approach

The buddY programs are systemically based. Particular emphasis is placed on two aspects:

  • Peer group education

Peers are closer to the action than parents and other adults. Friends enjoy trust. Peer group education makes use of the great influence that peers have on the development of children and young people. It incorporates the problem-solving skills of the “peers”, friends in a scene of people of similar age - the most important pillar of the buddy project. The focus is on " empowerment ", that is, the ability of young people to act as experts in their own interests. In the buddy practice projects, young people learn from their peers or students who are a little older than them: Fifth graders, for example, learn tips and tricks from sponsors from the 9th grade in order to find their way around the new school. Brawlers learn from their break buddies to resolve their conflicts peacefully in the playground. Sometimes a child of the same age explains the math problem better than a teacher. In this learning process, both sides acquire important skills. Peer group education also makes people take responsibility for themselves and others, uz in many situations.

  • Lifeworld orientation

Affected become actors. Buddy programs are linked to real problems and thus to the student's environment. The pupils acquire their skills on questions that they ask themselves in everyday school life anyway: How can I help my friend who is always annoyed by others? How can we prevent smoking in the school yard - without being "uncool"? Solving such problems gives them the feeling of using their skills as helpers and being effective as a person. Students and teachers also decide together what is relevant for them and what they want to work on as part of a practical project. The association wants to achieve a new learning culture in the central educational institutions of day care centers , families , schools and universities . The focus is on the needs of children and young people. This is about an expanded concept of education, which includes that a person is able to make decisions about his life independently, that he recognizes and develops his potential and can participate in social and political life according to the empowerment approach .

Spreading the buddy approach

The buddy EV was introduced in certain federal states through training courses in cooperation with some ministries of culture. Lower Saxony started in 2005 (93 secondary schools), which the buddy project introduced at the time as part of the violence prevention decree. In Berlin , the project / program has been running since 2006 after the Rütli school scandal at around 400 primary schools as part of the addiction and violence prevention measures of the Berlin Education Senate. In Hesse, pupils from 151 secondary schools take part in the state buddy program. In North Rhine-Westphalia, entry was made through a model project in Düsseldorf and a pilot program for secondary schools in East Westphalia-Lippe. The NRW state-wide buddY program children's rights for schools has existed since 2015. In 2007, Thuringia launched a state program for 110 schools. Around 1,600 schools have already completed buddY training.

Awarded prizes

Together with the Vodafone Foundation Germany, the association honors successful buddY practice projects every two months.
