Edvard Henrik Carleson (born November 16, 1820 in Valstad , Östergötland , † April 1, 1884 in Stockholm ) was a Swedish statesman who, as Minister of Justice between 1870 and 1874, was both Prime Minister and Minister of Justice of Sweden .

Life

The great-great-grandson of the MP and writer Karl Carleson and the MP, economist and writer Edvard Carleson began to study law at Uppsala University in 1841 and passed his state examination in 1841 . He then became an employee of the lower judicial auditor, before he was appointed assessor at the Swedish Court of Appeal ( Svea Hovrätt ) in 1850 .

Between 1850 and 1851 as well as 1853 and 1854 he was a member of the Estates Congress , where he represented the nobility and knighthood in the Committee on Law. During his renewed membership in the State Council, he was from 1856 to 1858 representative of the nobility in the constitutional committee.

In 1858 he became director of the office of Minister of Justice Louis De Geer and was promoted to the rank of Permanent Undersecretary in 1859 and in 1860 Judicial Councilor. From 1868 to 1874 he was chairman of the Trollhätte Canal Society ( Nya Trollhätte kanalbolags direction ).

On May 4, 1874, he finally succeeded Axel Adlercreutz as Minister of Justice and was therefore both head of the cabinet and Minister of Justice. After just over a year, he resigned on May 11, 1875 and handed the office of Minister of Justice back to Louis De Geer.

In 1875 he became a judge at the Supreme Court ( Högsta Domstolen ) , the highest court in civil and criminal matters.

Carleson, who also became a member of the First Chamber of the Reichstag in 1874 , was first Vice-President of the First Chamber in 1878 .

On the occasion of the 400th anniversary of the University of Uppsala, he was awarded an honorary doctorate in law in 1877 .
