Edvin Adolphson (born February 25, 1893 in Norrköping , † October 31, 1979 in Solna ) was a Swedish film actor and director . He played over 500 different theater and film roles and was considered one of the leading character actors in his country.

Life

Adolphson was born as the only child of the theater actress Maria Adolphson and the author Gustav Adolphson on February 25, 1893 in a hospital in Norrköping. He was seduced into acting by his mother. From 1912 he attended various drama schools in Solna as well as in Stockholm and his hometown Norrköping. In the course of his long theater career, he played in important Stockholm theaters such as the Royal Dramatic Theater , the Oscar Theater and the Vasateatern . In 1950 he played at the Theater directed by Ingmar Bergman to Mack the Knife in The Threepenny Opera .

Adolphson had been in the film business since 1918 when he took on a small role alongside Victor Sjöström in Mauritz Stiller's silent film Thomas Graal's best child . By 1966, Adolphson starred in over 100 films as well as several television productions. In 1939 he played the male lead alongside Ingrid Bergman in the film En enda nattt , which later became world famous. He took on one of his best-known roles in 1951 as a benevolent uncle in the Golden Bear- winning drama She Danced Just One Summer . In 1961 he starred in the comedy film Engel - do they exist? at the side of Jarl Kulle .

In addition to his work as an actor, Adolphson also wrote several plays and scripts himself. He also worked as a director in theater and film. Between 1929 and 1947 he directed a total of eleven films, the last of which was Ingen väg tillbaka with himself and Anita Björk in the lead roles.

Adolphson was married four times, including between 1927 and 1932 to Harriet Bosse , also an actress. He had a total of six children, including the actress Kristina Adolphson and the musician Olle Adolphson . In 1979 Edvin Adolphson died of a stroke at the age of 86 .
