Edward Henry Palmer

Edward Henry Palmer (born August 7, 1840 in Cambridge , † August 10, 1882 at Khelat et Nakhl ) was an English orientalist .

Life

Edward Henry Palmer studied in Cambridge at St. John's College until 1867 . Between 1868 and 1869 he took part in the expedition of the Palestine Exploration Fund sent to explore the Sinai region and traveled together with Tyrphitt Drake to the Et-tib and Moab deserts until 1870 . In November 1871, Palmer was appointed Lord Almoners Professor of Arabic at Cambridge University. He began studying the oriental languages ​​very early on and, almost entirely as an autodidact, acquired a great deal of knowledge in them. In 1878 he moved to London .

At the beginning of the Egyptian War in 1882, Palmer volunteered to go on an expedition to the Sinai Peninsula to win the Bedouins over to England. His efforts were initially successful, but he was captured on his second campaign through the desert with his companions Captain William John Gill and Lieutenant Harold Charrington on behalf of the Egyptian governor of Khelat et Nakhl and murdered near this post on August 10, 1882 .

In April 1883, Palmer's remains were interred in St Paul's Cathedral in London.
