Edward Linley Sambourne (born January 4, 1844 in London , † August 3, 1910 ibid) was a British draftsman, caricaturist and illustrator.

Live and act

Linley Sambourne was the son of the merchant Edward Mott Sambourne and his wife Marion, a daughter of William Bird Herapath . He was educated at the City of London School and College in Chester . In 1861, at the age of 17, he began training as an engineer at the John Penn and Sons marine engineering company. In early 1867, by chance, one of his sketches came into the hands of Mark Lemon , editor of the satirical magazine Punch . On April 27, 1867, Sambourne's first drawing, entitled "Pros and Cons", appeared in Punch magazine . Sambourne turned entirely to drawing and has published caricatures regularly since that time. He illustrated numerous books, including the new edition of Charles Kingsley's The Water Babies from 1885. In 1883 he was responsible for designing the diploma for the International Fisheries Exhibition in London. His caricature The Rhodes Colossus , which appeared in Punch in 1892 , is considered one of the most famous political caricatures of the 19th century. In April 1896 Sambourne was accepted into the Athenaeum Club . From January 1, 1901, he succeeded John Tenniel as the chief cartoonist of The Punch .
