Edward McPherson

Edward McPherson (born July 31, 1830 in Gettysburg , Pennsylvania , †  December 14, 1895 there ) was an American politician . Between 1859 and 1863 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Edward McPherson attended public schools in his home country. In 1848 he graduated from Pennsylvania College . After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer, he began to work in this profession for a short time. For health reasons, he then gave up this activity. In the following years he edited newspapers in various cities in Pennsylvania. He first became a member of the Whig Party and after its dissolution in the 1850s the Republican Party .

In the congressional elections of 1858 McPherson was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 17th  constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Democrat Wilson Reilly on March 4, 1859 . After being re-elected, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1863 . Until 1861 these were shaped by the events in the immediate run-up to the civil war and then by the war itself. In 1862 it was not confirmed.

In 1863 McPherson served briefly as the Deputy Commissioner of Revenue for the Treasury. Between 1863 and 1875, from 1881 to 1883 and again from 1889 to 1891 he held the office of clerk in the US House of Representatives. In June 1876 he chaired the Republican National Convention in Cincinnati , where Rutherford B. Hayes was nominated as a presidential candidate. In the years 1877 and 1878 he headed the Treasury belonging Bureau of Engraving and Printing . He also continued to work in the newspaper industry. He died on December 14, 1895 in Gettysburg, where he was also buried. He and his wife Annie Crawford had five children.
