Edward John Stanley, 2nd Baron Stanley of Alderley, 1st Baron Eddisbury PC (born November 13, 1802 - † June 16, 1869 ) was a British politician of the Whig and the Liberal Party , who was three times Paymaster General and President of the Board of Trade and Postmaster General.

Life

Family, Member of the House of Commons and Undersecretary of State

Stanley was the son of John Thomas Stanley , who was Member of the House of Commons for the Whig between 1790 and 1796 and in hereditary by a letters patent dated May 9, 1839 as Baron Stanley of Alderley , of Alderley in the County of Chester Nobility was raised.

He graduated after visiting Eton College at Christ Church of the University of Oxford and was on April 29, 1831 for the Whig himself a member of the House of Commons, in which he initially represented the constituency of Hindon until December 10, 1832 . He was then elected to the House of Commons on December 17, 1832 in the Cheshire North constituency and was a member of this until July 12, 1841.

During the tenure of Prime Minister Charles Gray, 2nd Earl Gray was he from 1833 to 1834 Undersecretary of State in the Colonial Office ( Colonial Office ) and in the subsequent cabinet of Prime Minister William Lamb, 2nd Viscount Melbourne from July to November 1834 State Secretary at the Ministry of the Interior ( Home Office ) . In the second government of William Lamb, 2nd Viscount Melbourne, he was from April 1835 to August 1841 Secretary of the Treasury ( HM Treasury ) . At the beginning of the tenure of Prime Minister John Russell Stanley was in June 1846 Under Secretary of State ( Foreign Office ) and held this position until the end of Russell's term of office on February 23, 1852. On August 4, 1847, he was in the constituency Cheshire North again as MP Elected to the House of Commons and belonged to it until June 2, 1848.

House of Lords and Cabinet Member

By a letters patent dated May 12, 1848 Stanley himself was raised to the hereditary nobility as 1st Baron Eddisbury , of Winnington in the County of Chester, and was henceforth a member of the House of Lords . After the death of his father on October 23, 1850, he also inherited the title of 2nd Baron Stanley of Alderley .

In the last month of Russell's tenure as Prime Minister, he was again both Paymaster General and Vice President of the Board of Trade in February 1852.

After the formation of the so-called “Peelite” coalition of Whigs and Conservative Party by Prime Minister George Hamilton-Gordon, 4th Earl of Aberdeen , he was again Paymaster General and Vice President of the Board of Trade in 1853 and retained both functions until the end of the coalition government February 6, 1855.

In the cabinet formed on February 6, 1855 by Prime Minister Henry John Temple, 3rd Viscount Palmerston , Stanley became President of the Board of Trade and held this post until the end of Palmerston's tenure on February 20, 1858.

In 1860 he was appointed Postmaster General with cabinet rank by Prime Minister Viscount Palmerston and held this post in the government of Prime Minister Russell formed on October 29, 1865 until the end of his term on June 26, 1866.

His marriage on October 7, 1826 to Henrietta Maria Dillon-Lee, daughter of Henry Augustus Dillon-Lee , 13th Viscount Dillon , had eight children, including Henry Edward John Stanley , who after his death was the third Baron Stanley of Alderley as well as 2nd Baron Eddisbury inherited. Another son was Edward Lyulph Stanley, 4th Baron Stanley of Alderley , who inherited the titles of 4th Baron Stanley of Alderley and 3rd Baron Eddisbury from his brother. He also inherited the title of 4th Baron Sheffield from a cousin .
