Edward Stanley, 3rd Earl of Derby
Edward Stanley, 3rd Earl of Derby KG PC (born May 10, 1509 , † October 24, 1572 in Lathom , Lancashire ) was an English nobleman .
Life
Edward Stanley was still a minor when he inherited the title of nobility from his father Thomas Stanley, 2nd Earl of Derby on May 23, 1521 . King Henry VIII took on the task of raising the earl until he was of age. He hired the Catholic Cardinal Thomas Wolsey to look after the royal ward. Edward Stanley accompanied Cardinal Wolsey, among other things, on a trip to France and was one of the nobles who were present at the declaration of Pope Clement VII on the divorce between Henry and his wife Catherine of Aragón .
In 1530 Thomas Howard, 2nd Duke of Norfolk , married his eldest daughter Catherine to Edward. This happened without the necessary consent on the part of Henry VIII and was one of the acts with which Thomas Howard wanted to expand the influence of the Howards . Despite Henry VIII's sharp reprimand against Thomas Howard, the marriage was allowed to continue. However, Catherine fell victim to the plague a few weeks after the wedding . The second wife was Catherine Howard's half-sister Dorothy Howard. 1533 Edward Stanley became a Knight of the Bath beaten and 1547 as a Knight Companion in the Order of the Garter was added.
Politically, Edward Stanley plays a role in the suppression of the Pilgrimage of Grace , a disturbance that was triggered by the dissolution of churches and monasteries. He held the office of Lord Lieutenant of Lancashire and Cheshire from time to time and was Lord High Steward in 1553 . He was one of the judges in the trial of Lady Jane Gray .
