Edward Rolf Tufte (pronunciation: ˈtʌf.ti ) (born March 14, 1942 in Kansas City , Missouri ) is an American information scientist and graphic designer .

Life

Tufte studied statistics and political science at Stanford University after graduating from Beverly Hills High School in Beverly Hills in 1960 and received his doctorate in 1965 from Yale University . After graduating, he was a professor at Princeton University from 1967 to 1971 .

Tufte was professor of statistics , graphic design and political science at Yale from 1971 until his retirement in 2004 and is a specialist in the design and presentation of information graphics, such as number pictures and diagrams . He is a member of the American Statistical Society and, since 1993, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences , and has received research grants from the Guggenheim Foundation and the Center for Advanced Studies in Behavioral Sciences . He was awarded seven honorary doctorates.

job

His main focus is the visual communication of information: information visualization , information graphics , information design and visual education .

He coined the term "chart junk" (for example: "chart garbage" or "chart dirt") to identify useless, information-free or information-obscuring parts of overviews. He demands that any decorative elements should be avoided in visual representations and that ink should only be used to convey, evaluate and interpret really important data. In this context he used the term “data ink” or “data ink ratio”.

Tufte developed sparklines , a graphical method to illustrate changes and trends (such as fluctuations in temperature or exchange or stock exchange rates ) in a space-saving manner. The sparkline traces the development, but in contrast to the usual graphics, it barely extends vertically above the height of the print line.

In Europe he became known to wider circles for his criticism of PowerPoint. He criticizes that PowerPoint determines the style of thinking and thus leads to a loss of information. Quote: "Powerpoint is evil". Among other things, he states that poorly prepared PowerPoint presentations would have hindered the information within NASA and were thus one of the causes of the crash of the space shuttle Columbia .

bibliography

His books are typographically designed by himself and are considered exemplary in design . None of his works have yet been translated into German. Longer excerpts from the books can be found on his website - as graphics - exactly as he wanted them to be printed.
