Information design

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Information design in the broadest sense is the selection, organization and presentation of information.

This information could come from any possible source. Ideally, this information is prepared in an understandable, effective and target group-oriented manner. Richard Saul Wurman, founder of the TED conferences , sees the designer as an information architect. Forms of representation or images are designed that show relationships at a glance and, under certain circumstances, enable understanding beyond language and knowledge boundaries. Information designers are “transformers” who can represent data, actions or processes in an understandable model. The term “transformer = transformer” was defined by Otto Neurath , an Austrian philosopher, social scientist and founder of Isotype (International System of Typographical Picture Edition). Together with the graphic artist Gerd Arntz, he presented statistical data in the form of graphs, which provided the viewer with easily understandable information.

Information design is related to various disciplines - from graphic design to computer science to psychology . The field for the design of information has expanded with the development of media from printed works to interactive applications on the Internet and even sensory information spaces. Nathan Shedroff, one of the first to describe himself as an information designer, coined the expanded concept of information-interaction design.

Basics

The frequent use of numerous technical devices has become commonplace for many people in the world. You have to process a lot of information in a very short time and adapt to new facts. This can lead to information overload . Topics from perceptual psychology play an important role here.

"Information design is defined as the art and science of preparing information so that it can be used by human beings with efficiency and effectiveness."

"Information design is defined as the art and science of information processing so that this information can be used by people with efficiency and effectiveness."

- Robert E. Horn

“Efficient” and “effective” are the key words that one of the founders of this new discipline emphasizes as the most important characteristics of good information presentation.

Information design is also seen as an integrator between the individual disciplines of information technology.

The strictly logical mathematical presentation of information does not correspond to the human perception and processing of information . In contrast, z. B. the representation using Chernoff faces well adapted to human perception.

Education

Information design is available at some universities as an independent course or as a focus of a design course.
