Edward W. Naylor

Edward Woodall Naylor (born February 9, 1867 in Scarborough , † May 7, 1937 in Cambridge ) was an English organist , composer and music teacher .

Naylor was a chorister at York Minster under the direction of his father John Naylor . He studied music at the Royal College of Music with Charles Villiers Stanford and from 1884 to 1888 organ at Emmanuel College in Cambridge near Frederick Bridge . He was organist in London at St. Michael Church (1889-1896) and at St. Mary Church (1896-97), then at Emmanuel College . He also taught at The Leys School until 1902 , then at Emmanuel College . From 1926 to 1932 he taught music history.

As a recognized Shakespeare connoisseur and music expert, he wrote books on both subjects, including Shakespeare and Music (1896). In addition to numerous church music works ( Magnificat , Nunc dimittas , Requiem Pax dei , Motet Vox dicentis, clama ), he composed the opera The Angelus (1909) and chamber music works. These never appeared in print, but were recorded and handed down by the bassoonist John Parr . Naylor's brother Charles and his son Bernard were also known as organists and composers, his brother Henry Darnley Naylor was an ancient scholar.
