Edward Winnington, 2nd Baronet

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sir Edward Winnington, 2nd Baronet ( November 14, 1749 - January 9, 1805 ) was a British politician.

Life

He was a son of Sir Edward Winnington, 1st Baronet and his wife Mary Ingram. He attended Eton College and studied at Christ Church College of Oxford University . In 1776 he married Anne Foley, daughter of Thomas Foley, 1st Baron Foley . The marriage produced five sons and five daughters.

When his father-in-law died in November 1777 and his son Thomas then moved into the House of Lords as 2nd Baron Foley , Winnington took over the vacant seat of his brother-in-law in the House of Commons as MP for Borough Droitwich on November 27, 1777 . He held the seat of parliament until his death in 1805. This enabled Winnington to regain the parliamentary seat that his family held during the first half of the 18th century.

When his father died on December 9, 1791, he inherited his title of nobility as 2nd Baronet , of Stanford Court in the County of Worcester . He was inherited by his son Thomas as 3rd Baronet. Like his father, he became a Member of the House of Commons. The same was true of Thomas' younger brother Henry , who represented the Worcestershire Western constituency in the House of Commons from 1833 to 1841.

Another son, Edward, became an Anglican clergyman and added his family name to Winnington-Ingram in 1817 . The 2nd Baronet is thus the grandfather of Herbert Frederick Winnington-Ingram , the great-grandfather of Charles William Winnington-Ingram and Arthur Winnington-Ingram , and the great-great-grandfather of the classical philologist Reginald Pepys Winnington-Ingram .
