Edwards Lifesciences , headquartered in Irvine , California, and Edwards Lifesciences Services GmbH , headquartered in Unterschleißheim near Munich, is a US company in the field of medical technology . The company is listed on the NYSE stock index.

The company was founded in 1956 by Miles "Lowell" Edwards and Albert Starr. With sales of 3.4 billion US dollars in fiscal year 2017 about 12,000 people are employed by Edwards.

The company is known for its Edwards SAPIEN TAVI / TAVR products, various heart valves of different sizes, heart valve reconstruction products, products for vascular therapy together with hemodynamic monitoring devices for measuring cardiovascular performance during surgery and in the intensive care unit, venous cannulas and the Swan-Ganz catheter .

history

In 1956 Miles Lowell Edwards constructed the first artificial heart. He has been fascinated by the human heart since his youth. With a background in hydraulics and fuel pump operations, he suspected that the human heart could be mechanized. He presented this idea to Albert Starr , a young surgeon at Oregon Health & Science University , who found the idea too complex. Instead, Starr encouraged Edwards to focus first on developing an artificial heart valve, for which there was an immediate need. After two years, the first Starr-Edwards mitral valve was designed, developed, tested and successfully implanted in a patient . This innovation was brought about by Edwards Laboratories , Santa Ana , which is not far from Edwards Lifesciences corporate headquarters.

In 1966, Edwards Laboratories was acquired by American Hospital Supply Corporation and renamed American Edwards Laboratories . In 1985, American Edwards was acquired by Baxter International . In the spring of 2000, the company was spun off as an independent, publicly listed company and began trading on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol "EW".

Today, Edwards continues to lead the market in tissue heart valves and repair products with the most advanced hemodynamic monitoring that has helped treat and manage more than two million patients worldwide.

Products

Edwards Products Biological tissue heart valves sold under brand names such as Carpentier-Edwards PERIMOUNT and Carpentier-Edwards PERIMOUNT MAGNA, as well as heart valve reconstruction implants - heart valve reconstruction implants - called annuloplasty rings - are used by surgeons to attach a patient's heart valve to bring it back to its native form.

TAVI / TAVR

The Edwards SAPIEN family of heart valves are implanted through a procedure called a transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR).

This procedure enables the placement and implantation of collapsible heart valves that are anchored in a stent and can be re-deployed in the body with the help of a balloon catheter or through “memory metal”. The valve prostheses enter the body through various access routes. Catheters are used and advanced to the heart. For example, through a puncture in the groin (transfemoral), on the arm (transaxillary), between the ribs (transapical) or across the front of the chest - through a small hole in the aorta (transaortal).

Further products

Edwards also manufactures vascular therapy products along with hemodynamic monitors to measure cardiovascular performance during surgery and in the intensive care unit. Hemodynamic monitoring enables the measurement of blood circulation and heart function, which clinicians use to measure whether enough oxygen has been delivered to organs and tissues.

Other Edwards products include the Swan-Ganz catheter. Originally developed for patients with acute myocardial infarction , it is now used in anesthesia and intensive care units. Healthcare providers use this type of monitoring in order to be informed about changes or problems in the patient's state of health, to identify them and to enable decisions to be made during treatment.

To facilitate cardiac surgery procedures through smaller incisions, Edwards also offers a cardiac surgery line of soft tissue retractors, with venous and arterial cannulas, aortic occlusion devices , venting and coronary sinus catheters, and reusable instruments for performing minimally invasive heart valve procedures.
