The Egelseebach is a small, approximately nine-kilometer-long brook that branches off as the eastern side of the Schmutter in the direction of the river before Mertingen via a dividing structure to protect against larger floods and flows from the right into the Danube opposite Zirgesheim .
River course
The Egelseebach is derived from the Schmutter in the municipality of Mertingen to the east. It flows consistently in a northerly direction and runs around two kilometers east of the municipality of Asbach-Bäumenheim . Finally, the Egelseebach flows into the Danube near the Urfahrhof district of Genderking .
history
Based on the design of the terrain, which was still visible in the 1950s, it is assumed that the Schmutter had the course of today's Egelseebach. In 1957 the river loops were straightened. This created an unnaturally diked flood drainage ditch. Since the straightening resulted in a shortening of the course and thus an increase in the gradient, a large number of falls had to be installed over the course of time , which in turn prevented fish migration.
In 1995, the Donauwörth Water Management Office made numerous improvements to the river. Eleven falls have been converted into 26 stone ramps and stone slides to create a rough surface that allows fish and other aquatic life to climb. Furthermore, the bank reinforcement was removed, the banks renaturalized and side channels created. Branches with gravel banks arose along stream currents . With the more varied design of the stream, the most varied of habitats were restored.
The aim in 2002 was to gradually rebuild further obstacles and to implement the planning of an Egelseebach weir with a fish pass to enable fish and aquatic organisms to make their complete ascent from the Danube to the Schmutter.
free time activities
The Egelseebach is known by anglers as a paradise for fly fishers . In addition, the landscape is ideal for hiking or a simple walk.
