Egide (Egidius) Linnig (born August 25, 1821 in Antwerp , † October 13, 1860 Sint-Willebrord ) was a Belgian marine and landscape painter and etcher . He was one of the first realistic erasers in Belgium.

Life

Egide Linnig was a son of the painter Peter-Joseph Linnig (1777–1836), who came from Aschbach in the Grand Duchy of Nassau, and his wife Catherine-Joséphine, nee. Leya. He received his training at the Antwerp Academy , the Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten , from 1834 to 1839 with Matthias Van Bree (1773–1839) and then until 1842 with Jacques Van Gingelen (1810–1864).

In 1840 he showed his first pictures in Antwerp at the Driejaarlijks Salon , after which he regularly took part in exhibitions in Belgium and Germany. Linnig settled in Antwerp, study trips took him to Holland (1844), England, Ireland and Norway (1847). His oeuvre includes shipwrecks, storms and thunderstorms at sea, but also views of the Scheldt and the Flemish coast.

Egide Linnig died at the age of 39 of complications from pneumonia.

family

Egide Linnig belonged to a 19th century Antwerp artist dynasty. In addition to him there were his two brothers Jozef Linnig (1815-1891) and Willem Linnig the Elder (1819-1885), his sons Willem Linnig the Younger (1842-1890), Egidius Linnig the Younger (1844-1908) and Benjamin Linnig (1860–1929), all of whom were artistically active as painters, photographers or etchers. Even his father Peter-Joseph Linnig was a painter, and Benjamin Linnig's daughters were also active as painters.
