Willem Linnig the Elder
Willem Linnig the Elder (born April 7, 1819 in Antwerp ; † August 8, 1885 there ) was a Belgian portrait and genre painter and etcher .
Life
Willem Linnig was a son of the painter Peter-Joseph Linnig (1777–1836) and his wife Catherine-Joséphine, b. Leya. He received his training from Hendrik Leys at the Antwerp Academy , the Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten .
In the 1870s he taught as a professor at the University of Fine Arts in Weimar , including his son Willem Linnig the Younger . In 1877 Linnig co-founded the Weimar Society for the Art of Etching . In 1883 he returned to Antwerp. His works were mainly history pictures and genre scenes in which he created the atmosphere in Antwerp in the XVI. and XVII. Century.
Willem Linnig died in his hometown at the age of 67 and was buried in the Antwerp Schoonselhof cemetery.
family
Willem Linnig the Elder belonged to a 19th century Antwerp artist dynasty. Next to him there were his two brothers Jan Theodor Joseph Linnig (1815-1891) and Égide (Egidius) Linnig (1821-1860) and his sons Willem Linnig the Younger (1842-1890), Ben (Benjamin) Linnig (1860-1929) ) and Egidius Linnig the Younger (1844–1908), all of whom were artistically active as painters, photographers or etchers. His father, Peter-Joseph Linnig, was already a painter, and his son Benjamin's daughters also became active painters.
