Egidius Sadeler the Elder

Egidius Sadeler (also Aegidius Sadeler ; in Czech called Jiljí Sadeler ; * around 1570 in Antwerp , † 1629 in Prague ) was a Dutch painter and engraver at the court of Rudolf II in Prague.

Life

Egidius Sadeler came from a family of copper engravers in Antwerp. He was the son of Aegidius Sadeler I and a nephew of Johann Sadeler and Raphaël Sadeler, with whom he was trained until 1585. In 1589 he was accepted into the painters' guild . He then worked first in Germany, from 1593 in Rome and from 1595 in Munich, where he met Joris Hoefnagel . It is possible that he was already active in Munich in 1590 and went from there to Venice, Florence, Bologna and Rome for his journeyman years before returning to Munich. From there he was appointed to the Prague court in 1597, where he worked for Rodolph II as well as for Mathias and Ferdinand II . Since 1621 he was a member of the painters' guildLesser Town of Prague .

His students include Wenzel Hollar and Joachim von Sandrart .

He made his first copperplate engravings from templates. These included works by Raffael , Jacopo Tintoretto , Tizian , Albrecht Dürer and masters who worked at the imperial court. Later I added my own depictions: landscapes and portraits of important personalities at the court of Rudolf II.

His engravings were faithful replicas of the templates. The period of his collaboration with Joseph Heintz , Bartholomäus Spranger , Johann Jakob Stevens von Steinfels and Adriaen de Vries can be described as particularly fruitful .

His most famous works include the portrait of the painter Bartholomäus Spranger and his wife Christina (1600), the view into the interior of the Wladislav Hall (1607) and his contemporary depictions of the capital Prague.

  • In 1605 he created a map of Bohemia, which contained the region from 48 ° 16 'to 50 ° 58' north latitude and 29 ° 54 'to 34 ° 28' east longitude. In addition to city maps, the map also contains maps of the Chaslau, Eger, Komotau, Laun, Prague and Schlan regions.
  • In 1607 he completed the great panorama of Prague as seen from Mount Petrein.
  • In 1620 his Bohemia appeared in suas partes geografice distincta , 390 × 450 mm in size and on a scale. The copper engraving contains a view of the cities of Praga , Egra , Zaslavia , Commona , Lavna , Slana in the upper part , in the left margin portraits of queens, nobles, merchants and peasants. Fons Albus was noted at the source of the Elbe , next to it Mons Giganticum (Riesengebirge) with the explanation Montes Gagantum caco demone infesti quem incole Ribenzal vocant de quibus vulgo miranda recensutur. The legend continues: Nomina que habet triangulum in tine sunt Bohemica .
