Leo Egidius Schiffer (* 1956 ; † July 21/22, 2018 in Bochum ) was a German serial killer who went down in criminal history as the "Strangler of Aachen". Between 1983 and 1990 he murdered five girls and women between the ages of 15 and 31 and sexually abused three of them. His deeds became known as "hitchhiking murders" or "disco murders". In 1985, an unsolved search for him was also carried out in the program Aktenzeichen XY ...

Series of murders

Egidius Schiffer committed the first murder in July 1983 near Alsdorf : 18-year-old Marion G. got into the perpetrator's convertible at a bus stop. When he attacked her, she struggled with all her might and even crushed the windshield. Although she was able to prevent rape, she was strangled, stripped, and thrown into a fishing pond by Schiffer.

In February 1984 Egidius Schiffer assaulted 15-year-old Andrea W. near Würselen when she habitually hitchhiked home after visiting a discotheque. He raped the student before strangling her and dumping her dead body on a dirt road.

On August 31, 1984, 17-year-old Angelika S. got into Schiffer's car on the way home from the “Rockfabrik” discotheque on the B 221 near Geilenkirchen . The student's body, only wearing a bra and stockings, was discovered in a forest.

In December 1985, 18-year-old Marion L. was abducted, raped and killed in Aachen . She too had been standing at a bus stop. Schiffer drove across the country with the body in the trunk for an hour until he found a place to dump it. He covered her bare body with leaves.

On June 16, 1990, Sabine N. disappeared near Niederkrüchten on her way home from the discotheque "Inside". Egidius Schiffer had dragged the 31-year-old into his Mercedes, raped and strangled her. Walkers only found her skeletonized corpse a year later in a wooded area near Wegberg . Based on the dental prints, the body could be identified as the missing Sabine N.

Arrest and conviction

In March 2007, Egidius Schiffer was caught stealing metal scrap in Heinsberg and arrested. He voluntarily submitted a saliva sample, which convicted him as a perpetrator in five unsolved murders. Then on August 23 of that year he was arrested for murder. During the interrogation, he confessed to the five murders, but revoked the confession in front of the regional court on the grounds that he had sadomasochistic tendencies; He only admitted the murders because the thought of pre-trial detention and punishment aroused him. He was also forced to make the confession.

However, the court relied on the repeatedly repeated confession in which Schiffer had also disclosed the perpetrators' knowledge , as well as the DNA traces at the crime scenes.

On August 19, 2008, 18 years after his last murder, he was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Aachen Regional Court for murder in five cases and rape in two cases. The court also determined the particular gravity of the guilt . The Federal Court of Justice rejected an appeal in June 2009 as unfounded.

death

On the morning of July 22, 2018, Schiffer was found dead in his cell in the Bochum prison.

There he had connected his body to the power grid with several cables to support auto-erotic practices. He died of an arrhythmia .
