Egino (bishop)
Egino (* unknown; † October 19, 1072 in Lund ) was the first bishop of Dalby and Bishop of Lund.
The Danish King Sven Estridsson divided the diocese of Roskilde into two parts after the death of the local bishop Avocos (Aages, around 1060). On the one hand, he installed Egino from Hildesheim in the resulting dioceses and assigned him the seat in Dalby. In the same year he was ordained Bishop of Dalby by Archbishop Adalbert von Bremen . On the other hand, Henrik, until then bishop in Orkney , received the diocese of Lund .
Egino had the Holy Cross Church built as a bishop's church and tried to strengthen Dalby's position as a bishopric opposite Lund. He dealt intensively with the mission , especially on Bornholm and in Blekinge . Together with Bishop Wilhelm von Roskilde, he opposed Sven's marriage to Gunhild, the daughter of the Swedish King Anund Jakob , which was then annulled by Adalbert von Bremen because of too close relatives. From 1066 he succeeded Henrik, Bishop of Lund. Henrik had come from the Bishopric of Canterbury , so Lund was a suffragan of Canterbury. Egino subordinated the diocese to Hamburg-Bremen. The dioceses Dalby and Lund were combined and Egino founded in Dalby a provost . In 1071 Egino visited Rome, whereupon he died in Lund on his return in 1072.
Adam von Bremen considered Egino to be a "scientifically educated man who was distinguished by his chastity". As a bishop he had evangelized in Blekinge and the residents of Bornholm. Allegedly he is said to have fearlessly turned against an idol , which is why the diocese of Lund was transferred to him.
