Former cemetery chapel

The former cemetery chapel in, old cemetery 'is an under monument protection standing cultural monument of the Baden-Württemberg town of Tettnang in Bodensee district in Germany .

Building history

The hexagonal building with a square anteroom was built in 1891 as a chapel for the Tettnang cemetery in neo-Gothic style. The plans came from the architect and church builder Joseph Cades , an important representative of historicism in Württemberg . The cemetery chapel was equipped with benches and an altar and served as a prayer room and occasionally for church services.

In 1937 the chapel was ceded to the city due to an imperial ordinance - every municipality was obliged to provide a morgue - and redesigned accordingly: the anteroom and main room were separated by a door, the altar and benches were removed. The city paid for the construction work on the building that remained in the possession of the parish.

In 1970 the interior of the chapel was completely renovated, the exterior renovation was carried out a year later. Both measures cost per 25,000  German marks .

When the 'New Cemetery' with the funeral hall on Friedenstraße was inaugurated in 1975 due to the capacity limitations of the cemetery , the old cemetery chapel lost its function. On January 1, 1977, the city took over the chapel and the surrounding, now 'old cemetery'. Soon afterwards, the Tettnang municipal council decided to transform the former chapel into a memorial for the missing and fallen of the two world wars; Corresponding conversion and renovation work was commissioned by the city. So by 1982 a new large window in the front wall of the main building was broken, the other windows were redesigned and a memorial stone, a metal chandelier and a wrought-iron entrance gate were installed.
