The Ring of Honor of the Rhineland is the highest award of the Rhineland Regional Association and has been awarded since 2001. The regional award honors personalities who “have made a special contribution to the idea of local self-government” in a growing Europe.
The chairperson of the Rhineland Landscape Assembly , the chairmen of the parliamentary groups in the Rhineland Landscape Assembly and the director of the Rhineland Landscape Association are entitled to make nominations for the award . The landscape committee of the Rhineland landscape assembly decides on the award by a two-thirds majority at the suggestion of the council of elders. The number of people to be honored annually is limited to three people.
Each ring is unique and is made of gold with an agate . The Cologne goldsmith Rudolf Klein found and worked on the stones on the banks of the Rhine near Rodenkirchen . They originally come from Idar-Oberstein and came to Cologne through the Rhine over the millennia. In addition, the gold-plated coat of arms of the Rhineland Regional Association is engraved. The inscription on the stones reads: "Ehrenring - Landschaftsverband Rheinland".
