Fritz Holthoff

Fritz HolthofF (* 5. January 1915 in Dortmund , † 18th September 2006 in Duisburg ) was a German politician of the SPD and Culture Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia .

Life

After studying pedagogy and sports pedagogy at the University of Bonn , the Reichsakademie für physical exercises and at the University for Teacher Training Dortmund (now part of the Technical University of Dortmund ), from 1947 Holthoff was initially a teacher at the Christian Community School ( elementary school ) in Rünthe, today a District of Bergkamen , then from 1953 worked as rector at the Falkschule in Unna . In 1954 he became a senior school officer in Duisburg; here he was later, from 1957 to 1966, head of school. In 1960 he was appointed honorary professor for education and teaching at the Gerhard-Mercator University of Duisburg (now University of Duisburg-Essen ) or its predecessor institution. In 1980 Holthoff retired .

In 1947 he joined the SPD. 1950–1966 and 1967–1975 he was a member of the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia . After the social-liberal coalition took over the government in 1966, Holthoff was appointed minister of education. He held this office until 1970. Jürgen Girgensohn was his successor as minister of culture .

Fritz Holthoff is the grandfather of the contemporary German painter Jan Holthoff .
