Holthoff's early work block "Broken Vistas" was, although partially abstractly painted, at the same time tied to the motif. The motifs had romantic implications in the form of lonely mountains or overgrown houses. These were mixed with abstract structures.

That image design was given up in the later work block "Frozen Gestures" in favor of purely gestural painting . Although in some cases, landscape premonitions are still being created - such as through the arrangement of colors, which can symbolically stand for landscape structures - the painter clearly turns to a self-referential , abstract painting gesture.

Holthoff does not use any image templates from the Internet, the media or art history . With this he turns "against working with secondary realities" in order to strengthen the "experiencing subject in his own perception and knowledge". As a parallel strategy, he sees his turn to portrait format. While landscape formats are traditionally used more for depictions of landscapes, portrait formats are preferably assigned to portraits , i.e. the representation of a subject.
