Eilaboun ( Arabic عيلبون, DMG ʿAilabūn , Hebrew עַילַבּוּן, עֵילַבּוּן) is a local association in Israel's northern district inhabited by Israeli Arabs . The 5703 (as of 2018) residents are predominantly Christian Palestinians.

etymology

One theory is that the name Eilabun comes from Arabic and means "hard, stony ground". Another theory says that the name comes from Hebrew and comes from "Ailabu", a possible modification of Ein Levon .

1948 massacre

In a massacre on October 30, 1948, 14 young men were killed, twelve of them were executed. The residents were initially expelled to Lebanon as refugees, but were later able to return.

procedure

The village was occupied by the 12th Battalion of the Golani Brigade as part of Operation Chiram after a skirmish outside Eilaboun in which six Israeli soldiers were injured and four armored cars were destroyed . The residents hid in the two local churches while they were accompanied by five local priests. White flags were hoisted. The army led the residents of Eilaboun to the main square of the village. 17 young men were selected, five of them were taken as human cover, twelve were killed in groups in different locations. This came after the rest of the villagers were deported to Lebanon after walking for five days. According to a UN peacekeeping report, Israel was forced to allow people to return.

documentation

The massacre is the subject of the documentary The Sons of Eilaboun by the Palestinian filmmaker and artist Hisham Zreiq .
